STUFF I MEANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT

vacation all i ever wanted

vacation all i ever wanted

How much did I need this vacation? How much? A lot much. That’s how much. We didn’t go on a vacation in ‘09, and man, did I feel it. So this return to Dewey Beach was very, very welcome. And it did not disappoint.

I’d have to rate this one of our more successful vacations. Possibly the most successful vacation TO DATE. We returned to a rental we had previously been in, and it was a good one. My expert husband selected well. The corner unit where we stayed last time put us too close to the loudness of the STD Motel next door. Also, it didn’t have functioning a/c. The one we stayed in this time (where, according the guest book, we had stayed in ‘07) had some cushioning between us and the neighboring hotel, which was nice, since they appeared to be holding tryouts for Delaware’s version of the Jersey Shore.

For the Fourth of July, we went to the Rehoboth Boardwalk and FUNLAND. This was Anna’s first time at THE RIDES. There’s nothing quite like strapping your kid into a huge piece of machinery that’s probably over 50 years old and watching your little one get whisked one away for the THRILL OF THEIR LIFE. It is amazing. For a few dollars, you provide your kid with unmitigated joy and happiness. Best money I’ve ever spent.

Once the weekend and holiday crowds go home, Dewey Beach turns back into a pretty family-friendly beach town. They have a weekly film screening on the beach, and we were treated to Shrek II. I’m pleased to report, it wasn’t nearly as annoying as I feared it would be. The kids liked it. Sam got to play with glowsticks, so that was excitement enough for him. Later in the week there was a bonfire, where marshmallows may be roasted. And more glowsticks!

And, like that, it was over. OVER. Far too soon. Also, I should mention we all were sick the entire week, but I hardly remember that now. It was a wonderful week, waaay overdue.

One of my favorite moments came one afternoon on the beach, when Sam climbed into my lap and leaned really close and whispered in my ear, “I think we should live here ALL THE TIME.” I can’t argue with his logic. Would that we could.
